Abbeyhill School Tour

Abbeyhill is a co-educational and non-denominational school located in the heart of old Edinburgh, overlooking the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Arthur's Seat. The school caters for children from Primary 1 to Primary 7, and has a Nursery class which provides pre-school education for children aged 3-5 years.
We have 5 main playground areas which includes a large grass field where the pupils can enjoy eating their packed lunches on our picnic benches during the warmer weather.
Adjacent to this area we have a football pitch, wildlife garden and enclosed Nursery garden. There are also garden boxes where the pupils enjoy growing plants and seeds relating to our science topics.
We are currently raising funds to upgrade our play facilities in the playground.
An area of our playground has been developed as a wildlife garden which is a wonderful resource for the pupils who are investigating minibeasts as part of our science curriculum.
Our school is very fortunate to have its own swimming pool so our pupils can benefit from year round swimming lessons with our swimming instructor.
Our gym hall is used for all indoor sporting activities by our P.E. specialist, teaching staff and visiting sporting initiatives.
It is also used as the venue for our weekly school assemblies and is our venue for packed lunches during the winter.
After school the hall is used by many community groups and clubs.
We have a well equipped ICT suite which allows our pupils to develop their computer skills and the teaching staff have the benefit of using our interactive whiteboard. Each classroom has an interactive whiteboard and can use our class sets of lap tops there is also access to the internet as well as a super range of educational CD Roms.
Our library which provides an extensive collection of fiction and non-fiction titles for our pupils to use each week.
Our collection is all computerised using the Junior Librarian package.
We also host the Scholastic Book Fair each year which helps us to replenish our book stock thanks to the generosity of our parents.
This is our Teacher Resource Base where all the literature and resources that we use to deliver the curriculum are stored.
This room is used for work with small groups and individuals with the Support for Learning teacher and it is also a base for the EAL (English as an Additional Language) staff who work in school each week to support the bililgual pupils in school.
Each day our lunch room provides a delicious hot meal for pupils.
On a Friday the pupils are provided with a packed lunch.
Our school lunch costs £1.65 each day.
